The Five Qualities that make a Leader

Among many qualities required to be a good leader, there are five common traits recognised across the globe regardless of age, location or size of the company.

1) character

A good leader has an exemplary character. A leader needs to be trusted and be known to live his/her life with honesty and integrity. Character is both formed and revealed by how one deals with day to day situations and extraordinary pressures and temptations. Thus the decisions taken by the Head of the firm can very well portray his or her character. Indra Nooyi of Pepsico has been in the industry for 17 years because of her relationship building, one of her strengths other than her five Cs of Leadership.

2) Optimistic communication

Optimism and good communication go hand in hand. Leaders who have genuine concern for others should definitely be the source of positive energy, They always seem to have a solution and always know what to say to inspire and reassure. They avoid personal criticism and pessimistic thinking,. Likewise, if a company has to reach new benchmarks of achievement, its leader should have an art of clear communication. He has to really listen to his employees with empathy. So a good effective leader should have an optimistic communication. Tim Cook , CEO of Apple Inc is known  as a great communicator and the fact that optimism is always the secret behind his charisma.

3)  Good listening is another important trait that every leader should possess..A good leader has to listen to everyone’s perspective and then put his foot forward. The fruit of success may ripe only when it is given its required time. Sundar Pichai, the new CEO of Google can very well be taken as an example. He is a good listener who sits quietly throughout the meetings that he attends and then gives ideas which would work for all..

4)Direction

Having the vision to break out of the norm and aim for greater things — being sensitive to changing global trends, ready to do a predictive analysis, managing the goals on how to reach the newer height are essential characteristics of good leadership. Jeff Bezos who founded Amazon is a pioneer in the world of internet commerce. He analysed the buying habits of customers and started an online shopping website which till date provides a wonderful shopping experience for all the age group

5) Competitive spirit

A successful business leader should be a ruthless competitor, ever thinking about whom his competitors are and what can be done to capture the market. This spirit of the leader would always ensure giving his entire team a greater alertness.

If Bill Gates had not an eye over his shoulders to look at his competitors, he wouldn’t have touted the merits of Microsoft software applications amidst companies like Apple, Intel and IBM.

5) Honesty and integrity

Strong leaders treat people how they want to be treated. They are extremely ethical and believe in honesty and integrity, the mere foundation on which success can be harvested.. They always believe in transparency and avoid misinterpretations among their employees.. Jon Huntsman, is a multibillionaire who started a chemical company and transformed it into a $12 billion enterprise. He never compromised on his principles of doing honest and integral business. And the fact that his success relied on his honesty and integrity had been evident through his book ‘Winners never cheat’

Good leadership is about mentoring, guiding, coaching and leading from behind. In doing so, they give people the opportunity to develop, innovate and contribute to the success of the overall organisation.
